We serve the women and children of Paterson, a city facing harsh adversity. With a population of 150,000, Paterson is one of the most densely populated cities in the state of New Jersey - and 24% of its people live below the poverty line. That's almost double the 13% national average.
Moreover, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that one-third of poverty-stricken families in Paterson are children living with single mothers.
Oasis serves local women and children from the lowest economic levels, most receiving some form of public assistance. Many of our adult students read at elementary school levels, with approximately 60% speaking very little, if any, English - which gives them little hope of finding their way out of poverty.
